Where There's Smoke by Jodi Picoult

Where There's SmokeWhere There's Smoke by Jodi Picoult
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This short tale features Serenity Jones, a TV psychic (a real one!) who has her world turned upside down when she unwittingly exposes a cover-up in the military. The spirit of the soldier she was speaking for is furious when the meeting with his wife doesn't turn out the way he wanted... and that's when everything around Serenity starts bursting into flames! She also gets involved in the search for a Senator's missing son, which turns out to be a regrettable decision.

Serenity is likeable enough (though somewhat pretentious) and should be interesting to see what the author does with her next. The story was entertaining and well written but felt ultimately pointless to me. I'll put that down to it being intended as a more of an introduction to the character and her life.
If you haven't read anything by Jodi Picoult, or even if you're a long-time fan, you should enjoy 'Smoke'
