Two Blue LinesTwo Blue Lines by S.C. Montgomery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

His fear . . . Her secrets . . . Their choice.

What if the only girl you’ve ever loved lied to you?
Lied to everyone?
Those two blue lines changed everything for Reed Young and Melissa Summers. In more ways than one.
And now, he must decide for himself . . .
Man up or walk away?

SC Montgomery has created an emotional tale of first love, difficult choices, and impossible secrets. A deliciously angsty debut you need to read for yourself.

***Reader Warning***

Two Blue Lines is the emotional, honest story of two teenagers whose lives are about to change forever. While not glorified, or portrayed in detail, there are themes of sexual assault and teen pregnancy, as well as allusions to teenage drinking and some foul language. It is all meant to create an honest, relevant novel, but please be aware and read only if you’re comfortable.

"I just knew that Mel was my compass. Had been for the past three years. She came into my life at my most emotional and had been my touchstone ever since. I'm not sure I'd know how to be without her."

Melissa and Reed have been a couple for the past three years and are very much in love. The flies in the ointment? Melissa is pregnant at 16 and there's something she isn't telling Reed.

There's no need to include a 'don't try this at home' disclaimer with this one because the book offers a raw, heartbreakingly realistic portrayal of the trials and sacrifices kids are forced to endure when they're about to have a kid. Nope, there's no sugar coating or waving a magic wand to make it all better. They have to put up with snide comments and contempt from their classmates at school, the emotional withdrawal from both sets of parents, and confront their fears for the future. Do they really have what it takes to raise a child?

I'm not going to spoil the plot for you but I will say that their story is an emotional roller coaster that does end on a happy note. Melissa was a likeable girl and though I had strong suspicions about her secret, my heart broke for her when the truth finally came out. Reed was far from perfect but his devotion to Melissa... wow! He behaved admirably and showed a maturity beyond his years.
